The painting is inspired by the life of Lafcadio Hearn and the film Kwaidan. It was awarded a Medal of Contemporary Art at the International Art Exchange Exhibition, Kobe, 2019.
The work explores the quest for belonging, with all the difficulties such a journey entails, alongside an inner awakening in the search for identity — a pursuit that marked Lafcadio Hearn’s life and travels. He ultimately found inner peace in Japan, where he died under his adopted name, Yakumo Koizumi (小泉 八雲).
