Biography
Dimitris Pikros (b. 1973, Greece) is an award-winning Greek contemporary painter based in London. His practice is driven by a lifelong investigation into the evolving possibilities of painting, centred on the research question: How can painting continue to evolve? Developed through his Innovative Painting Manifesto (2000), his work explores painting as a living process that continually responds to contemporary visual culture while expanding the perceptual and experiential possibilities of the medium.
Figurative Liquid Topography is the experimental methodology through which Pikros investigates how painting can continue to evolve. By mapping biomorphic forms, chromatic complexity, and dynamic spatial movement, he develops new pictorial values that expand the perceptual possibilities of painting. Rather than relying on conventional outlines and modelling, his paintings invite viewers into immersive encounters with painting through embodied perception and the continuous interaction of colour, form, and space.
Graduating with First Class Honours from the School of Fine Arts at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Pikros achieved the highest grades of his year. His early work was selected for presentation at Art Athina 2000, where the exhibited collection was acquired in its entirety, marking the beginning of his professional career. Since then, his paintings have been exhibited widely across Europe, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom, and are held in both public and private collections.
Following a successful early career, Pikros stepped away from the commercial art world to undertake a sustained period of research through Zen, meditation, and Shri Vivek Yoga under the guidance of Shri Guruji Swami Vivekananda. This period informed the development of his Art-Mindset Methodology and fundamentally reshaped his understanding of painting as both artistic research and embodied experience.
Today, alongside his studio practice, Pikros continues to develop immersive painting environments, performative works, and participatory projects that extend the relationship between painting, movement, perception, and the viewer, while remaining grounded in his ongoing investigation into the evolving possibilities of painting.
Artist Statement
My practice is driven by a lifelong investigation into the evolving possibilities of painting, centred on the research question: How can painting continue to evolve? This enquiry has been guided by my Innovative Painting Manifesto, developed in 2000, which proposes painting as a living process that continually responds to contemporary visual culture while expanding the perceptual and experiential possibilities of the medium.
My early work (2000–2006) was informed by the structural rigour of the Bauhaus and the pictorial intensity of Francis Bacon and Gary Hume. By removing conventional outlines, I allowed colour to define form through contrast and proximity, generating rhythm, perspective, and movement across the painted surface.
Figurative Liquid Topography is the experimental methodology through which I investigate how painting can continue to evolve. By mapping biomorphic forms, chromatic complexity, and dynamic spatial movement, I explore new pictorial values that expand the perceptual possibilities of painting. Rather than relying on traditional modelling, I create a continuous dialogue between surface and depth, inviting the viewer's eye to move fluidly across the canvas while simultaneously drawing it into zones of heightened perceptual intensity.
Painting, for me, is not a static image but a living perceptual environment. By replacing conventional shading with relationships of colour, movement, and form, I seek to expand the experience of painting beyond representation. My practice explores how painting can create the conditions for new ways of seeing, where perception, image, and viewer exist in a continuous process of transformation.
